Music Monday: Overexposed Edition

I recently bought Maroon 5's new album, Overexposed.  I know the critics are mixed, but I actually really love it.  I love Adam Levine's voice and the lyrics can be both sweet, clever, and endearing with a hint of sexy thrown in just to mix it up.  Not all songs on the album are great, but the majority of them are.  Below, I've listed my top three as well as some honorable mentions.

1.        Wipe Your Eyes  It's one of the sappy songs, but it's catchy and I adore the line: At night before you fall asleep I run my thumb across your cheek...

2.       One More Night  Another catchy one, but more uptempo than the first one.  Definitely something that stays stuck in your head and makes you want to dance, even without the song actually playing.

3.       Love Somebody  I like the meaning of the song - everyone just wants to love somebody.  And I definitely relate to the line: If I fall for you, I'll never recover.  If I fall for you, I'll never be the same.  It manages to capture the feeling of stepping off a cliff but before the actual fall.

Honorable Mentions:  Payphone, Daylight, Fortune Teller

Music Monday

Ugh, I'm so sorry for my impromptu hiatus.  School, writing, and a cold have been pestering me.  I'm not one hundred percent better, but I wanted to update the blog.

This Monday, I have only one recommendation: anything by Lana Del Rey.  Her debut album, Born to Die, is amazing.  Don't listen to the haters, don't let her SNL performance throw you off: She's amazing.  If you're familiar with my work on Fictionpress, you know I tend to write about dark, sometimes bad characters and make them the heroes without trying to change them.  Nearly every single one of her songs is a story about bad heroes.

I can hardly choose my top 3 favorite songs of hers, but I'll try:

1)  "National Anthem."  On repeat and obsessed.  Absolutely no lie.  The hook in the chorus gets me every time: "Red, white, blue's in the sky, summer's in the air, baby, Heaven's in your eyes."  I can't stop listening to it.  Here.

2)  "Off to the Races."  Such a poppy, gangster song.  Here.

3)  "Million Dollar Man"/"Dark Paradise"/"Summer Sadness"/"Born to Die"/"Video Games"  (I told you I couldn't choose!)

I hope to be back soon, but we'll see.  Until then, I hope you enjoy the music!

Music Monday

1)  blink-182's "All of This."  I've mentioned this song before, but seriously, I cannot get enough of it.  I got the CD a few weeks ago and I've listened to this song nearly one hundred times.  It's a simple song and the verses tend to repeat, but you can feel what the singer's going through.  That, paired with Tom Delonge's bridge of "Use me, Holly, come on and use me" gets me every time.

2)  Demi Lovato's "Unbroken."  This song is just perfection.  It's edgy but hopeful, strong but vulnerable.  You can hear the power and determination in her voice.  I love it because when she gets to the chorus and tells her guy, "I'm gonna love you like I've never been broken," I want to sound as sure as she is about falling in love and not worrying about if he's there to catch her or not.  It's inspiring but still such a great song to dance to.

3)  Lady Antebellum's "As You Turn Away."  This song is just heartbreaking.  I've listened to a lot of sad songs since Goatboy and I broke up, and this is one of the few that manages to capture what I felt during that time but in a way that makes it relatable to everyone.  My heart always clenches hearing Hillary's voice crack when she sings, "The door is closing and I just can't change it..."
